Ant Exterminator

There is a specific groan most people elicit when they find ants in their homes. Seeing them crawling over your floors (and sometimes walls) causes many people to feel like they’ve lost control of their home, and that there is nothing they can do about it. The good news is these infestations are manageable with the right knowledge and pest control company. It’s about knowing your enemy.

Types In California
While there are more than 12,000 species in the world, only about 270 of them located in California. The most common species we see is the Argentine Ant, an invasive species with a dull brown color and only about 2 millimeters long. We might also encounter Pharaoh, Odorous House, Carpenter, and even Southern Fire Ants. These individuals come with their own specific set of problems and need to be dealt with in different ways. A successful plan for control of pests needs a professional approach.

They Can Carry Disease
A less commonly known fact about them is their ability to carry disease. While this isn’t the traditional way most people think of pests transmitting diseases, through bites or feces, they still have the potential to make everyone in the household sick.

Studies have shown, ants that were tested in household kitchens showed traces of multiple types of potentially dangerous, disease-causing microbes, including Salmonella, E. Coli, and Listeria. While this isn’t a direct concern if one touches you, it is significant when they walk on your food. The more you have in your house, the more microbes are potentially being transmitted. This alone is a significant reason you should seek out pest control services to get rid of the infestation as soon as possible.

They Can Cause Property Damage
While most people think of termites as the most destructive home pest, certain ants may give them a run for their money. In particular, Carpenter Ants have the potential to be incredibly damaging to the wood on your property. They don’t eat the wood like termites do, however. They excavate and hollow out the wood to make room for their extensive colonies. This can compromise the building’s structural integrity over time. They generally gain access through an area of the building that has had water damage or wood decay, but they have also been known to invade new buildings as well. They also like to build their nests in insulation, hollow doors, and wall voids. If you see any them in or around your home, give us a call right away. They are easily identifiable, as they are the largest ones in North America. They can grow up to half an inch in length and are black.
